The five principles embodied in Pancasila were the basis on which the republic was established. They are also the basic principles to be upheld in the strive to accoplish the goals of independence, e.g., to uplift the general welfare of the people, and raise the nation's quality of life. An appreciation of Pancasila is therefore necessary for an understanding of the Indonesian system and its people.
