Evacuees of the second world war

In 1939, nearly two million people, including many children, were evacuated from British cities to the countryside or abroad. The Channel Islands and Gibraltar also sent their younger residents to mainland Britain. Schools were relocated to large country houses, while individuals or small groups found accommodation wherever available. This evacuation caused upheaval and stress as people adjusted from city to country living.
