Crude oil extracted from the Samarang and Erb West fields offshore Labuan, located 53 km and 146 km from the island respectively, is accompanied by significant quantities of associated gas. The oil is transported through submarine pipelines to Shell’s terminal on Labuan Island and then shipped by tankers. Previously, the associated gas, a by-product of oil production, was flared.
