First they killed my father : a daughter of Cambodia remembers
Of those who survived the Cambodian genocide under the Pol Pot regime, this is a powerful story of war crimes and desperate measures, the terrible power a little girl and her family have, and their spiritual victory. One of seven brothers from a senior government official, Loung Ung lived a happy life in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, until he was five years old. Later, in April 1975, Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge army invaded the city, forcing the Ung family to flee and, eventually, disbanding. Loung was trained as a soldier in a labor camp for orphans, his brothers were taken to a labor camp, and survivors would not be reunited until the Khmer Rouge was destroyed. Loung's heartbreaking yet hopeful story is an unforgettable story about a family that is shaken and confused, but miraculously empowered by courage and love in the face of countless atrocities.
