Studies on contemporary China : the Chinese economy under Deng Xiaoping
It is now almost twenty years since the Chinese government undertook its first economic reforms and embarked on a path that was to lead to an increasingly strong commitment to the establishment of a market-oriented economy. The Chinese Economy Under Deng Xiaoping offers an overview of the economic achievements of those post-1978 reforms. It highlights the major problems that emerged from that experience and speculates on the challenges and opportunities that have confronted China’s planners during the 1990s. The vagaries of policy and performance are captured in the various chapters, written by internationally known scholars or analysts, each of whom addresses a major area of economic activity.
