Microeconomics in action : an application book
There are many excellent economics prin- ciples texts available today. Written from a wide variety of perspectives, these texts do a fine job of explaining the theoretical tools that economists use to understand and interpret the real world. But in a sense the most difficult problem principles instructors face is that too often that understanding does not remain in students' minds much beyond the final examination. Simple repetition and the threat of being tested will force students to learn the tools for the final exam, but such learning has a half-life of only a month or so. Like any other kind of tools, theoretical tools are kept in good working order only if they are used frequently. If students can develop the ability to recognize the theoretical concepts of the introductory courses in everyday contexts and then put those concepts to use, they will (1) value the concepts themselves more highly, (2) find the concepts easier to remember, and (3) raise the general level of public discussion of economic matters. All three results are highly desirable.
