Power & Consent
The scandal involving former High Court justice Dyson Heydon, accused of sexual harassment (which he denies), revealed that this issue exists not only in Australian workplaces but also among top judges. Blind faith in legal minds on the High Court hid the prevalence of sexual harassment in the legal profession, similar to corporate Australia and other industries. Rachel Doyle, a Senior Counsel, argues in her book Power & Consent about the importance of understanding power dynamics in workplaces to address sexual harassment. Perpetrators often continue due to lack of accountability. The book calls for a new approach that emphasizes the strength in numbers, the value of multiple complaints, and the responsibility of bystanders in supporting victims and confronting perpetrators.
