Economic geography of energy Canada

Canada is a big consumer of energy. In 1995, the total consumption of the Country was 225.2 Mtoe. This, of course, represents only a small share of the the world energy consumption (2.8 % in 1995). But there are two indicators showing the relatively high consumption of energy in Canada : the energy consumption per capita and the one per dollar of output (GDP). The per capita figure was 7.5 toe in 1995 while the second one was about 21 thousand BTU per US dollar of output for the same year. This last figure can be compared to the American one : around 16 thousand BTU. The large value in Canada is explained mainly by the energy-intensive industries that prevail in Canada (e.g. the production of aluminum or other metals) which, of course, raise environmental problems: for instance, acid rains which affect the numerous lakes and forests in Canada. Some policies have been taken and Canada decided to stabilize the level of carbon emissions in 2005 at the level of 1988
