Economic policies for sustainable development

This report summarizes the findings and major recommendations of the seven country studies. The report also incorporates comments and suggestions from Bank staff, DMC officials, an international review panel, and international organizations. The report is organized in five main parts. Part I presents concepts and issues, describes the characteristics and constraints of the economic development process, and defines "sustainable development" as an overall principle for guiding economic activities. In Part II the recent economic performance of participating DMCs is reviewed, citing key economic, social, demographic, and environmental indicators. Part III concentrates on recommended actions, again based primarily on findings in the seven country reports; some of these are presented in the form of proposals for investments projects, sector programs, training operations and technical assistance (including cases suitable for confinancing by the Bank or other agencies on a regional or national basis). The fourth and longest part consists of country specific annexes based primarily on the reports prepared by the seven national study team. Appendixes comprise the final section of the report, providing statistical tables and background information regarding the preparation of the report.
