The natural resources of Flores Island
Geographically, Flores Island lies between Southeast Asia and Australia, which influences the floristic distribution of the islands. Most of the lowland areas in the island has been converted into farmland and rice fields. The remaining forested areas were found only in mountainous areas, such as in Ruteng areas of Manggarai district. Most of the remaining forested areas had been conserved as a recreation park, called Ruteng Nature Recreation Park (Taman Wisata Alam Ruteng) which covered an area of about 32,245 ha, with altitude between 500 and 2200 m. It was believed that the conserved areas represented most floristic diversity of the island. The present paper intends to report the results of an intensive floristic study conducted in some areas of the park.
