The songket of Minangkabau : raising hidden threads

The "songket" is not merely an exquisite traditional fabric but a symbol of the Minangkabau cultural dignity. The motives are abundant with ancestral hopes and prayers. The interlacing golder and silk threads are opulent with philosophies and values, covering different aspects of life and civilization. It is our duty to treasure and conserve this unique cultural product.

To be a sustainable cultural product, the “songket” has to be easily accessed and worn by everyone. Wearing “songket” for everyday use will warrant its existence in society. This, in turn, will guarantee the livelihood of the traditional weavers. Innovations in design and techniques are also key in the revitalizing of the “songket”.
