World heritage : sites and living culture of Indonesia



This book encompasses the World Heritage sites of Indonesia—in natural, cultural and intangible categories—as identified and recognised by UNESCO. These include eight properties inscribed on the World Heritage list as cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal value, consisting of the Sangiran Early Man Site, Borobudur and Prambanan temple compounds, Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, and the Ujung Kulon, Komodo, and Lorentz national parks.

Also included are six examples of intangible heritage, including the Indonesian kris, wayang, batik and angklung (a traditional bamboo musical instrument), which are on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity; the Saman dance from Gayo, which is on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding; and the Programme of Education and Training in Indonesian Batik for school children in cooperation with the Batik Museum of Pekalongan in Central Java, which is on the list of programmes for safeguarding intangible heritage considered to best reflect UNESCO’s principles.
